Stockton
Situated on the banks of the River Tees, in between the towns of Yarm and Middlesbrough, Stockton is a busy town with a long association with railways; indeed, the world's first public railway, running from Stockton to Darlington, began operating in 1825.
Famous for more than its railways, Stockton has a varied history based around both industry and innovation; the renowned furniture designer, Thomas Sheraton, and inventor of the friction match, John Walker, both came from Stockton.
Stockton is famous also for its International Riverside Festival, which attracts artists from around the world annually, as well as for the Tees Barrage and white water course, featuring the largest international standards white water course in the UK.
